If you cannot find a niche market as an affiliate marketer then you are going to struggle to earn income, and income is the lifeblood of your business. Niche markets will generate for you a steady stream of income and if you do not do your research and find a niche market then you will not become a successful affiliate marketer. Now you understand the importance of finding your niche market, the steps below will help you to identify niche markets that will generate incomes for you.

Identify a market that you have an interest in and if possible one in which you are knowledgeable. You are looking initially for a broad category such as self improvement, sports, health and fitness. Once you have identified your category you now need to drill down into this market to identify your niche.

Explore what smaller component markets are available within your market. By components I mean look for more focussed areas of interest within the market. For example, for golf you may identify a specific niche within this market such as golf trolleys or golf clothing. You could even break the component down further into electric golf trolleys or golf waterproof clothing.

Once you have identified your specific niche you then need to find an affiliate product to promote. The easiest way to do this is to visit a company such as clickbank, check out their marketplace for your niche, select a good fit product, sign up as an affiliate and get marketing.

Now that you have identified your niche and the product you are going to promote you now need to identify what your target buyers look like. Take golfers for example. If your focus is electric trolleys then the chances are that your target buyer will be over 45 and a member of a golf club. If your niche is golfing waterproofs then you you need to identify who your target is and when they are likely to buy. For waterproofs you are marketing to a global golf market however different parts of the world will be looking to buy different types of waterproofs at different times of the year. In winter golfers look for heavy duty waterproofs, in summer they look for lightweight waterproofs. You are now beginning to clearly identify your niche and your target buyers.

You now need to identify which of your niche markets is likely to be the most profitable and herefore the one you want to promote and invest your time in. The easiest way to do this is to use the Google search engine. Come up with some keywords that you think your target buyers may use to find the products within the niche. Take the keywords and enter them into Google, remember to enclose your keywords within quotations. Check the search results returned. What you are looking for are keywords which return 10,000 pages. You then need to check for paid ads in these pages. If you find these then you have identified your first niche market with hot buyers but little competing marketers.

Now that you have done this for one niche market and proved it to be successful you can use these same steps to identify other hot niche markets. The more profitable niche markets you can identify the more products you can promote and the more revenue you can generate.

I am assuming that you are not completely new to Internet Marketing and that you understand what I mean when I talk about niche marketing. Niche marketing is one of the most profitable marketing areas on the internet, however to be successful in niche marketing you will need to do your research and find the best keywords to get your pages ranked highly by the search engines which will enable you to sell products.

People will tell you that to get into niche marketing, you build a blog or a website, visitors come to your website, buy your products and you pick up the income. That is true once you have put in the preparatory work including using you brain to root out the best keywords for your product. To do this you firstly need to think like your customer. If you were a potential customer within your niche what would you be searching for and what search phrases would you use. This is exactly what your potential customers will do.

You need to come up with as many key words or search phrases that your customer may use. The most high ranking keywords are called long-tailed keywords, these are keywords containing at least three or more words, hence the name long-tailed keywords. Long tailed keywords tend to bring in the most targeted traffic, since they are very specific to the niche you are marketing in. To be successful you should think up a list of 10 long tailed keywords for your campaign.

Once you have identified your 10 long tailed keywords you then need to test them to ensure they are profitable and to find out how many competing pages you will encounter with these keywords. You need to take each long tailed keyword, enclose them in quotation marks and then type them into a search engine. If there are paid adverts on the search page and the results that come back are less than 10,000 then you have selected good keywords that will generate a profitable campaign for you.

If the results returned are more than 10,000 then you are going into a very competitive area and you are better going back to your keyword selection to find these long tailed keywords with less competition. Again, if there aren’t any paid ads on the search page then the chances are that these are not profitable keywords and you should discard them and research different keywords.

Do your keyword research up front and you will increase the chances of selling into a niche and making the money that brought you into niche marketing to start with.

This is what is at the heart of niche marketing. It is gloriously suited to an internet or online business. Online you have none of the huge overheads the offline business owner faces. You can be in and out of niches quickly at low cost. You can test the market. You may not get it right every time but you can afford to get some wrong.

Ignore market research at your peril. For the online business there are a large number of free resources online that you can use. Have you tried the Google keyword tool for keyword research for instance? This will show you exactly how often any particular word or phrase is searched for. This is giving you a strong indication of demand for your product. Look at forums, magazines, research eBay, Amazon. Find out what sells. Don’t try to be a trail blazer. Find a proven model and follow it. Go with the trend, don’t try to swim against the current; you’ll drown.

I struggle to see why any new small business owner today would want to start an offline rather than an online business today. But if you really must I strongly suggest you use the tools available on the web to do your market research before you put all your assets on the line. If you are starting an online business or trying to take one to the next level taking on board the concepts here will save you many years of struggle, frustration and ultimately failure. Just like the offline line world online marketers who ignore this principle are likely to fail. It usually just takes them longer.

A collapsed construction market left hundreds of contractors out of work, scrambling to bid on what few jobs there were. What was once a 5-bidder job now had 50 competitors. Contractors underbid jobs just to get work for their crews. This is not a good business strategy. It will catch up to you over time and put you out of business. My husband spent enough years in the construction profession to see a market collapse-and-return scenario more than once. He knew he’d have to remain calm and weather out the storm. He knew his business would have to diversify. The market will return when the time comes. Until then, you have to find another way to survive.

Just in case you are not familiar with the term niche, and niche markets, I will briefly explain. A niche market can simply be described as a small group of people that have a problem, and actively searching for a solution to that problem.

Here is an example of a niche market within the market of computers, and how I would go about using a marketing niche strategy to promote this niche.

Example Niche

Computers – ( Market)
Laptop Computers – (Smaller Niche Market)
Micro Laptop Computer – (Even Smaller Niche Market)

In my example above, a niche market would be computers. A smaller niche within computers might be persons searching for information on laptop computers. We can even further classify the smaller niche of laptop computers to and even smaller niche market of people searching for micro laptop computers.

A marketing niche strategy for the niche market of computers, might be to focus our advertising on the term micro laptop computers, instead of focusing on the top level niche term, computers.

You may be wondering why your marketing niche strategy should be focused on the term micro laptop computers, instead of the top level niche term, computers. Studies have shown that top level niches are normally saturated with competition, from other advertisers.

My marketing niche strategy would be to advertise to the people within the sub niches, rather than the larger niche market of computers. Let us now use our example niche market, “micro laptop computers” to go through the steps that I would take, to get my marketing niche strategy started.

Our niche market keyword would also be the same as the niche we have chosen. In this example, our “long tailed” keyword would be, “micro laptop computers”, instead of the broader term, “computers”. The broader the keyword chosen, the lesser the chances would be for success, within that niche.

The first step I would take would be to research my chosen keyword, to see how much competition I am up against. To do this I would go to goggle, and type my chosen keyword “micro laptop computers”, within quotes, into the search space provided. I would then take note of how much other advertisers are using the same term. If our competition is less than five thousand, or even ten thousand quoted results, then it should be okay to focus our advertising on the keyword, “micro laptop computers”.

Next, I would research to see how many persons have searched for my “long tailed” keyword within the last month. To do this I would use the goggle keyword research tool. If the monthly estimated traffic is about one hundred, or more searches per month, then I would write my keyword rich article based on the keyword, “micro laptop computers”. I have chosen article marketing for this example only. There are many other advertising strategies available to use when advertising niches.

Step 2: Look For High Potential Profits

Secondly, you want to look for a niche that offers a good return on investment. Ask yourself – are other businesses paying for advertising for that niche?

Another way to find out if a product is profitable is to do some testing. Start promoting affiliate products using pay per click advertising. If you make sales, then you know that it is a profitable niche.

Step 3: Look For Low Competition

Step number 3 is to look for a niche that has a low level of competition. My husband spent enough years in the construction profession to see a market collapse-and-return scenario more than once. He knew he’d have to remain calm and weather out the storm. He knew his business would have to diversify. The market will return when the time comes. Until then, you have to find another way to survive.

He propelled his company into different areas of the market. This often required putting commercial crews on residential work, but carpentry is carpentry and vinyl siding is vinyl siding, wherever it is being installed.

A well-built niche marketing strategy is important to the survival of your business. But are all of your eggs in one single basket? Are you risking everything on one single venture?

The internet abounds with untapped opportunities. Many kinds of monetized sites exist that you can add to your “portfolio.” Some of them have not even been dreamed up yet. There are affiliate marketing opportunities, AdSense sites, blogs, membership sites, and so much more.

Use creativity in your niche marketing strategy. Don’t always copy everyone else. Following the majority is not always the best road to take. An oversaturated market won’t provide the profit you are seeking. New inventions attract more attention and, naturally, more buyers.

I am certain there are some who do not agree with my ideas. That is okay; I’m not a follower of the pack, either. I put faith in my ideas and follow my gut to see where it leads me. Diversification is a key element in my niche marketing strategy.

Yeah, no one wants to hit the books (or in online business – the search engines), however it is essential if you would like to be successful. Just like you would research keywords for your articles, blog posts and other areas of search engine optimization, research is essential for narrowing down the most advantageous niche for your high quality product.

Wherever do you start off? A lot of people come up with a quality product and then search for the niche. Others have decided on a niche that they would like to pursue, but do not have any thought of a product or service to recommend. In both cases, see who is interested, if there is any interest at all.

Let’s say that you have decided to do something with pets. Well, there are a lot of pet species. Perhaps you are partial to dogs. Even then, there are still vast amounts of dog species that folks all around the world own as pets. Seeing as you know for certain that you would like to pursue dogs, pick a specific dog. Is there interest in pugs? How about schnauzers? Who will you look at, people who already have that specific kind of dog or would-be owners of the breed?

That previous question is of great consequence because of how you advertise your product. If you have a special dog collar or a pet bed, the intended market will be people who currently own that particular dog. Offering content on your site regarding how to get a schnauzer to sleep in their bed will not necessarily interest someone who wants to procure a dog but hasn’t decided on a schnauzer.

Join a Niche Forum

Is there a large quantity of schnauzer owners out there? If so, is your product unique? Identify places where schnauzer owners hang out on the internet and investigate. Don’t only solicit questions like a reporter or an investigator, but get involved to ascertain what they really need.

Use your research details to fine tune your product or service and your marketing plan of attack for building your targeted list. You do not want your marketing plan of attack to hit too general an audience or the incorrect focused audience. Pick a viable niche to start with to help develop a successful list and improved possibility of profit later on.

Marketing a business niche you are not familiar can be pretty hard for you, and it can be very difficult trying to promote a product or service you have no clue about. When you have used a product or service yourself, trying to market the product is much easier for you, and you will probably stick with it much longer. What works for you may not work for me, so we shouldn’t jump into something that someone else maybe having success with. Find a niche and test to see how profitable it is; if it works great for you then go forth with it. There are literally hundreds of niches to choose from, but there are too many people in the wrong lane, just like driving in the wrong lane on the Interstate, there is no flow.

You will know when you are in the right niche because, all of a sudden, you’re not working as hard anymore. The work has become enjoyable, and you no longer feel out of place even though the money may not be there yet, but you can almost feel it. You then look forward to spending time with your business because it has become like child’s play to you.

Finding your home business niche is not that difficult because you already know what your interest are. The narrow your niche is, the better it could be for you. In other words, you will probably have a better chance selling popular, hard to find shoes, than you would just selling shoes. In niche marketing, narrow is better.

The faster you find your business niche, the better it could be for you online. Of course this article is geared toward newer online marketers. More experienced marketers may have online stores in several niches, because when you master targeted traffic to your website, you can make miracles occur. Although you can’t just sit back and expect to be successful, you can make things go a lot smoother when you find your home business niche and get in the right lane.

You most likely know that a popular subject on the Internet like “dog training” is a highly competitive market. This means that lots of people search the Web for the phrase “dog training” and there are tons of people with websites attempting to grab hold of a portion of that market. That is a very competitive market.

In highly competitive markets you’ll find it to be very challenging to attain the first page of Google for a term like “dog training,” You could, in fact, spend a lot of time and energy optimizing your website, attracting links to your web site, and doing all the other things to help improve your search engine placement.

But, to what effect?

Because similar keyword phrases utilized in searches are so competitive, those who already rank close to the top are constantly working to optimize their website and continue to establish ever more backlinks to their website. It’s a never ending effort to stay on top.

So, unless you are the fabulous guru of optimization you probably have very little likelihood of breaking in to such a competitive market.

So, what is the answer for someone just attempting to break in to Internet marketing?

The solution is plain. Avoid the extremely competitive keyword phrases and locate phrases that get a moderate volume of searches but have little or no competition for the top spots in Google and other search engines. There are tons of keyword phrases that qualify for almost every major topical area you can imagine.

That’s basically what niche marketing is all about. Now, let’s look at the process you must undertake to be successful.

First you have to uncover keyword phrases with a modest level of searching. You can think of this as phrases that experience about 100 to 3000 or so searches monthly. There will be a number of such phrases connected with any important subject.

Then you have to analyze the competition on Google for those keyword phrases. Determine how hard it will be to dislodge some of the websites already on Google’s first page. Check how optimized the sites are for those phrases and how many backlinks these websites have. This lets you know how much work the owners of those sites have expended for these keyword phrases. Not only that, but, it lets you know how much energy you must apply to remove them from their top positions.

Once you’ve found good target phrases with very little competition, you’ll need to develop a website with pages that are optimized those keyword phrases. There are a number of tools you can use to construct websites.

Finally, you’ve got to establish links from other websites to your site and to the pages on your web site so your website will rank well in the search engines and dominate that market for those keyword phrases.

That, in a nutshell, is what niche marketing is all about.
