EBooks are ordinary books produced on a digital format. You can download them and read them on your PC or laptop, but if you want to read them on the move or take them on holiday, you will need an eBook reader. Many manufacturers have jumped on the band wagon and are churning out these devices. It`s incredibly difficult to say for definite which is the best eBook reader, so I`m not going to waste your time or mine by trying to pin it down because, to be honest, they are all very similar and the differences can only be in the technicalities. The ones listed below are the best selling ones available at the minute.

In my opinion, the most important attributes that go to making a really good eBook reader are weight and portability, battery life, memory capacity, an easy to use interface that is simple to navigate, and a good screen. All of these have those qualities. Sony have two of the top selling eBook readers on the market. The PRS-300 SC is Silver in color and is incredibly lightweight and has a clear 5“ screen. There are 3 adjustable fonts to make reading even easier, and 512mb gives you the capacity to store up to 350 books at any one time. The second Sony is the more expensive PRS600BC/C. This black eBook reader benefits from having a 6“ touch screen facility and a virtual keypad. Again it has an internal memory of 512mb.

The Aluratek Libre eBook reader is not an instantly recognizable name, but is made by Dell, so you know it is good quality. It is one of the easiest to connect to a laptop or PC so you can constantly update your library and also download those timeless classic we love to read on vacation. A classy white color, this eBook reader is low in price but exceptional in quality.

The Kindle 2 made by Amazon, is generally reckoned to be one of the best eBook readers on the market, and the testimonials do make pretty impressive reading. The 6“ screen is very clear and the battery can last up to 2 weeks from one single charge, which is quite something. It can store a might 2Gb of data at any one time and supports all many different formats; including Kindle, AZW, MOBI, TXT and also the convertible formats such as Microsoft Word and PDF. It also has two innovative features that the competition have yet to latch onto; the text to speech facility and also the Whispernet wireless internet connectivity.

Last on our list is another Kindle, the DX latest generation. This comes with a whopping 9.7“ E-ink screen, making reading a doddle for those who need larger fonts than are normally available. The overall size is 10.4 x 7.2 x.4, which makes it small enough and light enough to carry around easily, although it is slightly heavier than the Kindle 2. This also has the addition of TRF in its convertible formats, which is no bad thing.

Technology is changing all the time, but it is hard to imagine what else can be brought to an eBook reader to further enhance your reading experience. Suffice to say, if you purchase any of the ones on our list, you will be using them for years to come.

The Amazon Kindle e-book reader is not only the first creator of the digital book reading idea, but it also remains the preferred e-book reader you can get anywhere. While players most notably Barnes and Noble at the moment are making comparable products targeted at stealing away some sales, most people still see the value in getting the Kindle.

Presently there are five major good reasons to look into getting the Amazon Kindle e book reader rather then some copycat solution from the rivals:

Convenient to Hold

The Amazon Kindle is only an inch thick and weighs just 10.2 ounces! Carrying this device and reading feels comparable to holding a small paperback book, except you never have the inconvenience of turning pages or trying to remember where you left off when you are interrupted!

Simple to Download

In just a minute you’ll be able to download your books along with other documents right into the e-book reader through a 3G wireless connection. The gizmo will maintain up to 1,500 books or the equivalent of newspapers, magazines and various varieties of content and at this time there are around 450,000 book downloads presently available! The quantity of available downloads keeps increasing and you can now read PDF files on your Amazon Kindle as well.

Straightforward to See

The Amazon Kindle e book reader screen is made to avoid glares plus it really feels as though you’re reading from typical book pages! For anybody who is somewhere that’s not convenient for reading from your screen, you can even permit the gizmo to read to you out loud! This enables you to sit back and relax while savoring your reading material totally hassle-free.

This also makes the device ideal for those with very poor eyesight as well as other vision difficulties. It can also be useful to download and read aloud to young children!

Convenient to Manage

With one whole battery charge you can use your ebook reader for up to 1 week! This may differ according to how much time you spend linked to the wireless link doing downloads and just how many hours each day you spend reading, even so the battery life is fantastic even for heavy readers that devote a lot of time with their nose to the “page”.

Very simple to pay for

Apart from spending $9.99 for each e-book download, you do not ever have to pay additional money or service charges to make use of your e-book reader. Simply make your initial purchase and the 3G wireless internet connection necessary to finish your downloads is totally cost-free for the lifetime of the device!

You have to fork out the download fees for any content you purchase, however it is just $9.99 per ebook download (lower charges intended for magazines and various material) and you can at all times read the 1st chapter of the e-book before you decide to buying!

The wireless link works in 100 different international locations, so you can even make use of your e book gadget while you’re on vacation or away for work! There could be some expenses for making use of your reader in this manner, nonetheless it’s a very economical approach to read the news from back home or perhaps read the ebooks being unveiled in your home country when you are in another country.

The Amazon Kindle has been available on the market for quite some time and there are a small number of problems against it. You will discover more sophisticated variations available which will take the technological innovation of the ebook reader much further!

The thought of buying An Impolite Seduction, Her Lord and Master, or Mile High Mistress over the counter is enough to make even the bravest of us blush.

But the rise of eReaders has made the secret pleasure of indulging in steamy romances all the more attainable, offering the ability to download huge quantities of romantic fiction titles without anyone having to know. ‘It was a bold move to publish our entire catalogue as eBooks in addition to paper versions, but it’s paid off,’ says Tim Cooper, director of direct and digital marketing at Mills & Boon. In September 2008, Mills & Boon became the first UK publisher to produce all its titles as eBooks simultaneously to publishing the paper versions. ‘eBook sales have been higher than we had forecast – a real sign that eBooks are what our readers want, and they’re here to stay,’ explains Tim. According to Cooper, online sales were encouraged by the relatively low eBook prices that are about half the cost of many paperbacks.

More than 140,000 Mills & Boon stories were downloaded digitally last year, compared to 400,000 that were bought as paperbacks through Amazon. And US Supermarket Giant Tesco has reported a 57 percent rise in Mills & Boon eBook sales within the five months since the Sony Reader went on sale.

Mills & Boon has always been more popular with older readers, as many younger readers were often embarrassed to be seen reading one. But Tesco’s own customer research revealed that younger fans (ages 30 to 42) are now indulging in the eBook versions of these books. 31 percent of correspondents also said that they prefer not being seen purchasing the print versions, because of it being associated with older readers.

Selling particularly well as eBooks are the titles in the Mills & Boon “Spice” category – which offer slightly more erotic literature than the average romance novel.

According to Hazel Powell, commercial manager for books at Tesco, “Some bashful customers prefer to use e-readers so they can access stories privately. However, there is no reason why reading Mills & Boon should have to be a guilty pleasure.”

Ever since Mills & Boon were launched by entrepreneurs Gerald Mills and Charles Boon in 1908, millions of women have been entranced by this fantasy world of intrigue, danger, passion and romance. And the predictability that they offer is a very large part of the reason for their popularity. Smoking and one-night stands are not allowed. The hero is always tall and handsome. And the heroine is always attractive, never overweight, and often fragile and vulnerable.

This allowed the books to flourish during the war years when they were launched – when women needed to escape the dreariness of an era where both men and money were in short supply. And even though the world that women live in has changed a lot since then, everyone still needs a bit of escapism. Mills & Boon has managed to adapt and stay relevant, and is more popular than ever with more than 175 million copies sold each year, and a new Mills & Boon book sold every 5 seconds in the UK. They are available in 26 different languages and sold in 109 countries,

Working in partnership with Mills & Boon, New Holland Publishing has launched eBook Diva www.ebookdiva.com last month – a South African eBook Store dedicated to the romance genre. The website offers users an online shop with over 1200 titles and an interactive romance writers’ community, where romance fans and aspiring writers can share their work with other enthusiasts while protecting their own copyright.

And in order to get everyone reading Mills & Boon, eBook Diva is giving away 10 free eBooks. Go on, you know you want to. To try these out, visit http://ebookdiva.com/free-ebooks.php

It was a battle of the ebook readers for the holiday season in 2009, the Nook and Kindle 2 being two of the most popular models available. It makes sense to check in on how they are stacking up against each other now that the Nook has been out for a few months and has received some customer feedback.

The Nook Early Struggles:

Not In Stock? When the Nook was released in November, the public seemed to embrace the new ebook reader, and immediately sold out Barnes and Noble’s entire stock. Few actually got the Nook before the holidays. Most had to wait until January or February to get their devices. It seemed Barnes and Noble played a little on the safe side.

Dual Screen Navigation Issues? Immediately after release, it became apparent for some that there were issues with the Dual Screens. Firstly, many found the navigation confusing with the small color screen and upper reading screen. There seemed to be too many ways to navigate to certain content for some critics.

Time learning the device helps navigation, but it couldn’t help that the upper screen would “time out” while the lower screen was “thinking”, making you restart from the beginning of what you wanted to do.

Nook Vs. Kindle for 2010:

Barnes and Noble has since updated the device to fix known issues. The product is in stock for quick delivery and many people seem to like the product.

The Kindle 2 and Nook are very similar devices in many respects.

Same in price.
Same reading screens (E-Ink Technology)
Same default memory (2 GB)
Similar Size
Similar Weight (Kindle is slightly lighter)

The Nook Differences…

Allows Lending capability- You can lend out your books to other Nook owners (or app owners) for up to 2 weeks. You can’t use the ebook in that time that you are lending it.
Uses Android software- Allowing the use of Applications on the Nook.
Access to more public domain books for free.
Color navigation touch screen- You can scroll through book covers in color. This has been reported as slowing the ebook reader compared to the Kindle 2.

The Kindle 2 Differences…

International Wireless Usage- You can use the ebook reader in over 100 countries at the moment.
Text-to-Speech- This is a feature that has a voice read the book to you.
Push Button Navigation of Content.
The Kindle is slightly lighter at 10.2 ounces vs 12.1 ounces for the Nook.

You can see that the two devices are very similar except for a few key features. The Nook has the color-touch screen, whereas the Kindle 2 is push-button technology, and the Nook does not offer International coverage unlike the Kindle 2.

So Who’s the Winner?

It seems that the Nook’s special features are quickly becoming a chain around the devices neck. The color-touch screen has proven to cause slow navigation, and where’s the “Apps” that are talked about so much? How will they even be used, and will anyone care?

With the iPad coming out soon, the Nook starts to look like a confused device.

The Kindle 2 is an ebook reader and it’s not trying to be anything else. It’s international capabilities, text to speech, speed of navigation and longer battery life due to less flashy features makes it still the winner in my opinion.

Dear Lifehacker,
I’ve got a lot of ebooks in PDF and other formats, but some e-readers—like, oh, this iPad I just bought—only support specific formats with their default reader apps. What’s the best way to convert those PDFs to ePub?

Signed,
Sheepishly Sporting an iPad

Dear Sheepish,
The fact is, ebooks are still going through a lot of growing pains, which often leaves ebook early adopters like you in the lurch. As the always excellent Matt Buchanan over at Gizmodo explained, the ebook industry is in a place much like the music industry was in the late nineties: Everyone’s looking for a standard format they can all agree on, DRM is getting in the way, and—for the moment, at least—it looks like ePub is as close to the MP3 of ebooks as it comes. Unfortunately, ePub is the only ebook format iTunes accepts (again, for now). On the plus side, ePub is a free and open standard, which is a very good thing—though DRM can still muck up ePub, so it’s not all roses and puppy dogs.

The point is, even though in an ideal world ebook readers could handle virtually any format effortlessly and without any extra work on the users’ part, there are worse things you could convert your ebooks to than ePub. So without further ado, here’s how you can convert nearly any (non-DRMed) ebook format into ePub on Windows, Mac OS X, or Linux. (Note: These steps focus on PDF-to-ePub conversion, but the same basic strategy can help you convert nearly any ebook from one format to another, provided it’s not protected by DRM.)

Download and install Calibre, the free and cross-platform ebook management tool we’ve featured a couple times before. The screenshots below were taken on OS X, but Calibre works on Windows and Linux, as well.
The first time you start Calibre, select Default as your device type. (See screenshot below.) You could get more specific, but I found going with default worked fine for me, and I wanted to keep this as device agnostic as possible.

(Click the image above for a closer look.)
Drag and drop the ebook you want to convert to ePub into Calibre, edit any metadata if it’s not already to your liking (right-click the book in Calibre and select Edit meta information -> Edit metadata individually), then click the Convert E-books button in the toolbar.
Verify that you’ve got the correct Input/Output formats: On the far left of the Convert window, you’ll see the Input format. On the far right, you’ll see the Output format. The input format should default to the format the ebook is already in, and the output format should default to EPUB. If it’s not, just choose EPUB from the drop-down.
Convert! When everything looks how you like it (you can change the book cover if you’re not happy with how it looks here), click OK and let the conversion roll.
Move Your New ePub Book to Your Device: Once the conversion’s complete, right-click your newly-converted book and select Open containing folder to find your new ePub-formatted ebook. You can stop here if all you wanted was to convert the ebook to ePub. If you’re an iTunes/iPad user and you want to get that ePub book on your device, simply drag and drop the converted ePub book into iTunes. If you’re using an iPad, plug it in, make sure you’ve got iBooks installed, and just drag the book from iTunes to your iPad in the iTunes sidebar under Devices.
Enjoy! And that’s it. Next time you launch iBooks, you should see your newly convered ePub ebook, ready to read.

It’s clearly not a perfect method, but huge thanks go to the developers behind Calibre for making it a relatively painless process—especially at a time when ebook standards are still this unformed.

Hope that helps!

Love and reading,
Lifehacker

P.S. Got a preferred method of your own for converting ebooks from one format to another, let’s hear about it in the comments.

Once you’ve found the subject of your e-book, if you’d like it to rack head and shoulders atop the others, by producing not just cash from its initial sale but also establish your reputation as and expert worthy of bookmarking and seeking out further products and services from, it is best to heed these bits of advice.

Any matter in that you are feeling capable of coming up with plenty of insight on to write an ebook should also be researched again fully. Simply searching for news and or dissenting opinions with regards to the perspective you may be going with and including them into your written content you’ll make an infinitely more significant portion of literature.

If by researching you can come up with a wild and unique perspective creating an e book encompassing such controversy may pull awareness and more product sales just be sure that you have enough information to back your crazy claims.

Just about all literature is divulged in the writers voice but to keep your words clear and to keep the words flowing and personable try and imagine when you are composing that you’re explaining the subject to one single particular human being that you know out of your day to day life.

You’ll visualize simply how much more effective your composing will likely to be if you think about an certain individual before following your professional opinions.

Consider the queries they might ask and make use of examples to help them visualize the ideas. Aim to put yourself from inside the shoes of a person who wants to acquire the information you are planning to extend. Exactly what is the consumers current emotional status ınduced by not until now having the information that you’re dispensing. Can they seriously feel embarrassed because of not understanding the material already? If so, then placing this straight into perspective when you sit down at the keyboard may make an enormous distinction in how the subscriber feels toward you subsequent to polishing off your trusty ebook.

Many people log in to the net to try to ask private questions in privacy that many people wouldn’t normally even think of asking their best buddies. In cases like this a delicate touch of reassurance backed up using statistics showing that they are certainly not alone in their doubts may alllow for a much better and quite possibly a widely recommended ebook on “touchy” topics.

As a final point before you publish have your content proofread by numerous people as possible, few of us have the ability to proof our own projects. A oversight made in penning can easily be slipped over in editing if the same individual does both. The most important thing is to have the e-book easy to understand by your purchaser (it doesn’t do any good if you are the only one who can understand it) so test out your ebook on a few mates gather their input and take any kind of tips they furnish you to heart.

By adjusting your writing so they can comprehend it you should have an infinitely more universally accepted piece of literature.

Some people might feel lost about how they should start an eBook business on eBay because they do not have any prior experience of something close to that. However, one must be reminded that there are several steps that a person can follow to be ensured of a very successful e-book business in the very popular site known as eBay.

The first step that one must do to be able to successfully start an eBook business on eBay is to choose carefully the e-books that you will sell online. In choosing the right e-books, it is always recommended that you go with the ones that have a topic that you have knowledge about. It does not necessarily require a person to be an expert in a certain topic just to be able to sell it although it helps if you really are; one just needs to be familiar with it so that selling it will not be so hard for you. This is helpful so that when a customer asks something about the e-book you are selling, you can answer it convincingly. In addition, this can really create your credibility as a seller.

The next step that you must do is to be aware of your competition; it is always best that you know the strategies that have in place. Remember that this is not done so that you can cheat on them, but this is done so that you know how you will become better than them.

The third tip is for you to anticipate the future sales that you will be making depending on the e-books that other people are buying from you. Being observant with the e-books your customers buy can become a real advantage for you since this can help you in analyzing what they are really interested in.

A tip that you can really benefit from is to start small. This will give you more room for improvements and in making your services better. Of course, when you start off small, you can monitor how your business will grow; you will also be able to immediately identify the areas that you still need to improve on. Another tip that can be useful in being successful in this eBay business is for you to never get tired of trying. This aspect involves trying out different e-books from different topics and seeing what works the best with your trusted customers.

In relation to the previous step, making sure that your customers will appreciate your e-book listing involves giving them the latest that are available. Being up to date is really a big factor of your success because you would not want your customers to find the same e-books over and over again every single time that they check your listing. This will just bore them and will make them lose interest in your eBay business.

These are just some of the basic steps that you have to diligently accomplish to be assured that you will be able to start an eBook business on eBay successfully. These steps do not only guarantee a successful online business, but they will also make sure that the business will last for a very long time.
