The Nook Early Struggles:

Not In Stock? When the Nook was released in November, the public seemed to embrace the new ebook reader, and immediately sold out Barnes and Noble’s entire stock. Few actually got the Nook before the holidays. Most had to wait until January or February to get their devices. It seemed Barnes and Noble played a little on the safe side.

Dual Screen Navigation Issues? Immediately after release, it became apparent for some that there were issues with the Dual Screens. Firstly, many found the navigation confusing with the small color screen and upper reading screen. There seemed to be too many ways to navigate to certain content for some critics.

Time learning the device helps navigation, but it couldn’t help that the upper screen would “time out” while the lower screen was “thinking”, making you restart from the beginning of what you wanted to do.

Nook Vs. Kindle for 2010:

Barnes and Noble has since updated the device to fix known issues. The product is in stock for quick delivery and many people seem to like the product.

It seems that the Nook’s special features are quickly becoming a chain around the devices neck. The color-touch screen has proven to cause slow navigation, and where’s the “Apps” that are talked about so much? How will they even be used, and will anyone care?

With the iPad coming out soon, the Nook starts to look like a confused device.

The Kindle 2 is an ebook reader and it’s not trying to be anything else. It’s international capabilities, text to speech, speed of navigation and longer battery life due to less flashy features makes it still the winner in my opinion.

As the always excellent Matt Buchanan over at Gizmodo explained, the ebook industry is in a place much like the music industry was in the late nineties: Everyone’s looking for a standard format they can all agree on, DRM is getting in the way, and—for the moment, at least—it looks like ePub is as close to the MP3 of ebooks as it comes. Unfortunately, ePub is the only ebook format iTunes accepts (again, for now). On the plus side, ePub is a free and open standard, which is a very good thing—though DRM can still muck up ePub, so it’s not all roses and puppy dogs.

The point is, even though in an ideal world ebook readers could handle virtually any format effortlessly and without any extra work on the users’ part, there are worse things you could convert your ebooks to than ePub. So without further ado, here’s how you can convert nearly any (non-DRMed) ebook format into ePub on Windows, Mac OS X, or Linux. (Note: These steps focus on PDF-to-ePub conversion, but the same basic strategy can help you convert nearly any ebook from one format to another, provided it’s not protected by DRM.)

Download and install Calibre, the free and cross-platform ebook management tool we’ve featured a couple times before. The screenshots below were taken on OS X, but Calibre works on Windows and Linux, as well.
The first time you start Calibre, select Default as your device type. (See screenshot below.) You could get more specific, but I found going with default worked fine for me, and I wanted to keep this as device agnostic as possible.

Drag and drop the ebook you want to convert to ePub into Calibre, edit any metadata if it’s not already to your liking (right-click the book in Calibre and select Edit meta information -> Edit metadata individually), then click the Convert E-books button in the toolbar.
Verify that you’ve got the correct Input/Output formats: On the far left of the Convert window, you’ll see the Input format. On the far right, you’ll see the Output format. The input format should default to the format the ebook is already in, and the output format should default to EPUB. If it’s not, just choose EPUB from the drop-down.
Convert! When everything looks how you like it (you can change the book cover if you’re not happy with how it looks here), click OK and let the conversion roll.
Move Your New ePub Book to Your Device: Once the conversion’s complete, right-click your newly-converted book and select Open containing folder to find your new ePub-formatted ebook. You can stop here if all you wanted was to convert the ebook to ePub. If you’re an iTunes/iPad user and you want to get that ePub book on your device, simply drag and drop the converted ePub book into iTunes. If you’re using an iPad, plug it in, make sure you’ve got iBooks installed, and just drag the book from iTunes to your iPad in the iTunes sidebar under Devices.
Enjoy! And that’s it. Next time you launch iBooks, you should see your newly convered ePub ebook, ready to read.

I don’t know why, but I really like playing Mafia Wars. It’s a silly, very basic interfaced game that just hypnotized me and got me hooked within 5 minutes into it. Over the past few days, a major skirmish in the e-book pricing wars erupted between Amazon and book publisher Macmillan. After a nearly yearlong dispute over electronic book edition pricing, Amazon stopped all sales of Macmillan titles, even print copies, in a pretty shocking display of brinksmanship. Macmillan responded with a full-page ad detailing the fight with Amazon and its hoped-for pricing model. And finally, Amazon released a statement saying it was capitulating to Macmillan’s demands and selling the books “even at prices we believe are needlessly high for e-books.”

Now, before I go any further, let me clarify one thing: I absolutely believe $15 is too high a price for e-books. I believe and have said many times that the publishing industry threatens to strangle the baby e-book market in its crib with everything from DRM to refusing to allow text-to-speech features in e-readers to trying to impose antiquated release windows for e-book editions, and that includes the idea that a digital copy of a book should cost $15. That said, it’s time to let the market decide what it’s willing to pay.

Amazon is, finally, doing the right thing (albeit passive-aggressively in the extreme) by getting out of the way of publisher pricing and letting consumers decide what they’ll pay for e-books. What Macmillan is asking for is the same thing the music industry eventually demanded from both Apple and Amazon: variable pricing for digital goods. Yes, Macmillan wants to price new and major titles between $12.99 and $14.99, but they’re also talking about a pricing floor of $5.99. They’re trying to maximize revenue on the top sellers, but also retain the flexibility to drop the prices as the market demands. That’s actually how it should work.

Now, you could argue that Apple launched digital music sales into the stratosphere by turning digital music into a loss leader with the 99-cent track. But in truth, we had no idea what the market was willing to pay for digital songs. That consumers snapped up those 99-cent tracks could be proof that the price was too low. The variable pricing scheme may not be as popular with buyers, but it is generating revenue for the labels, and business is all about finding that perfect balance of sales and revenue. In the digital music world, labels are testing the price elasticity of demand for their product in the reverse order it normally happens. Starting low and raising prices over time is, higher revenues notwithstanding, not the standard way of things.

So, the book industry is basically saying they’d prefer to proceed in the more generally accepted capitalist format: you charge a lot up front to recoup initial marketing or R&D or production costs, and the price diminishes over time–or, as I think will be the case with e-books, you charge too much at first, figure out no one’s going to buy the darn things at 15 balloons, and settle in at $9.99 within a few years. But just as it wasn’t Apple’s place to dictate the 99-cent price to the music industry, it’s not Amazon’s right to tell the publishing industry what to charge for their books.

Again, seriously, I can’t believe I’m saying this. But put succinctly: sometimes you’ve got to let people make the mistakes they’re going to make, even if you know they’re wrong. And if the publishers, the music industry, the film industry, and anyone else wading into digital distribution can get the mistakes–DRM, restrictive prices, idiotic release windows, and the like–out of the way up front, the market will much more quickly settle into something we can all live with.

Look, Amazon’s not the hero of this story, and neither was Apple. They’re insisting on price points that are beneficial to them, because they’ve got serious business models built on moving digital media. (And it’s not like Amazon is the savior of authors and the publishing industry overall, either.) But if resalers are allowed to fix the prices for entire industries, it’s not good for those industries. Period. Yeah, the music industry biffed it big time by resisting digital distribution for all those years. God only knows how much revenue they lost over time (I once tried to calculate it and came up with about 100 quadrillion dollars). But we also don’t know how much money they lost while their goods were being sold at an artificially low price. The point of the free market is to let the market decide what it’s willing to pay for goods and services. Amazon’s the money-making middleman that’s actually prolonging the fight by preventing the market from doing its work.

So, go crazy, Macmillan. Put up your $15 e-books. I’m probably not going to buy very many of them, because honestly, $9.99 just feels right to me. But I might be wrong, and it’s about time we found out so we can all just settle down and create the future of book publishing together, OK?

Let us first tackle the two ebook reader versions offered by Amazon. There is the Kindle International version and the Kindle DX. The main differences is the current Kindle DX only has 3G wireless capability in the U.S. whereas the International version is available now in over 100 countries. The Kindle DX also is larger in both screen size and capacity. The DX has a nine inch screen, whereas the normal Kindle only has a six inch screen. The Kindle DX also has a larger memory size and can hold 3,500 books versus only 1,500 books in the Global Kindle.

A fairly new competitor is the Barnes and Noble Nook ereader. It has a lot of the same features as the Kindle Global version with a few added features. The Nook has Wi-Fi capability, whereas neither of Amazon’s Kindle’s do not. In addition, the Nook has memory expansion as an option and the ability to share media with friends through their Nook reader or through an iPhone, or iPod Touch, select BlackBerry and Motorola smartphones, as well as Windows or Mac PCs.

Newly released is the Sony Reader Daily edition. Their previous Touch ereader did not have wireless capability so was not really a contender in the ebook reader race. But the Daily now can compete with the best of them offering both 3G and Wi-Fi wireless connection and downloads. It does not have sharing capability like the Barnes and Noble Nook, but does offer an expansion slot and touch screen which Kindle lacks. It does have a larger screen size at eight inches and access to over 750,000 book titles, but no Wi-Fi. The 3G network is through Verizon with a Gobi chipset for worldwide use.

One important note to mention is content availability. The Amazon Kindle has a closed proprietary format which will always limit your media collection to a Kindle unit. The Nook, Sony Reader and Irex support the ePub open format which will always give your more flexibility for your library collection.

Based on the current choices and what each has to offer, there is no clear winner. It all depends upon what each individual user is looking for in an ebook reader.
